It’s a great spring day, so I am sorry if you are reading this in the heat of August wherever you are. Just think of me as a breath of crisp spring air in your sweltering day. And you can gloat when it’s August for me and you’re enjoying crisp fall weather! I’m on a kick of drinking lots of water, which is approved by my dietician. She suggested 128 ounces plus 8 ounces for each pound I want to lose. I go into some live math and of course, get it all wrong. I learned a bit about metabolism from the Interwebs and my dietician, and other places. Some determination of a person’s metabolism comes from heredity. This can be mitigated somewhat by exercise. And taking caffeine, cayenne, or eating spicy foods may have a very small and short-lived effect, but not significant enough to make it worthwhile. Of course, I like spicy foods and a little caffeine in the morning, so I guess I’ll get that miniscule benefit as a bonus. My blood pressure reached an all-time low (in my memory, anyway) of 120/72.

After learning about the Wendy’s chili that’s only 350 calories, I decided to make some at home. It freezes well, so I can make a batch on the weekend and have lunch for most of the week. The recipe is just Betty Crocker, and I substituted turkey for the beef, so it’s probably about 50 calories less.

I just spent more time in the grocery store this week. Eating healthy is not only more expensive, but it takes longer to shop because I have to read the labels to check nutritional information and ingredients. I got some spinach, an extremely rare thing in my experience. I am looking forward to making a smoothie with it. I should be able to get one or two of my daily vegetable servings this way without even tasting them!
