Welcome to Running: A FEVER. This is a podcast about fitness, diet, and medicine. My name is Michael Davis. My goal is to live a long, healthy, happy, active life right up to the very end. If that’s your goal, then you’re in the right place.
Well, here we are on, I guess you’d call it day 2. I got here yesterday afternoon and checked in at about 4 pm. I was hoping to do this outside, but here we are, and outside is not very favorable. I haven’t even seen the view from cabin 13 here, because it’s been foggy the whole time I’ve been here. I had some difficulty finding the place, but I was a little more experienced from last time when the same thing happened.
There is a windstorm outside. I wasn’t planning to go out today because rain was forecast. It actually rained last night. It was raining when I came in, and it rained a lot harder during the night. And this windstorm developed. It’s very windy out there. I’ve got some video I’ll show you of some trees and how they are moving in the wind. It’s actually a lot worse than it looks. The wind was literally howling all night long. I got up this morning, and it was still going strong.
Now, like I said, I wasn’t planning to go out today, so I’m hoping for better weather to do some hikes later in the week, hopefully tomorrow. But this is what it is right now. I do these episodes because it’s essential to my health to be mentally healthy. And part of that is getting away from it all. Now and then, I have to get away from it all. Something about being in the city makes me crazy. If I don’t get out occasionally and see what the rest of the world looks like, I can just go insane. So it’s about mental health, getting away from it all. And these cabins in the Arkansas state parks are a great way to do that.
This time I’m staying at Mt. Magazine cabin 13, and I know some people have searched for that, and they’re going to want to see a little bit of that. And so when I first got here, I took a video, and I’ll show you that right now. This is a relatively large cabin. I chose it because it’s the most isolated one. You can’t see the neighbors. Of course, I wouldn’t see them anyway in the fog. You can’t see the other cabins. There are no cabins on one side. So it’s going to be the quietest, uninterrupted place. But it does happen to be the most expensive one here, so keep that in mind if you’re planning to come to Mt. Magazine and rent a cabin.
So that is pretty much it. The plan is to do three hikes this week, and do an episode for each of the trails so that people can see what they look like, and I can talk to you about what it’s like. I’m planning to do the Signal Hill trail and some others. Signal Hill, I did last time. I’m going to see what it looks like now. This is November 18th of 2024. Even though this episode will come out in 2025, it’s actually November of 2024. The last time I came was in February, so things will look slightly different. So that’s what it’s going to be. So for now, I’m signing off from Mt. Magazine. And don’t forget, if you’ve got the fever keep it, and if you don’t, catch the fever, and I will talk to you next time on Running: A FEVER.
