The value of time is infinity per hour!
Yesterday we had a power outtage at my company. I was called in to make sure our IT equipment was running the way it is supposed to. And it was, thanks to the fact that the company has twice the IT equipment it needs to do all the things it does. Half of the equipment is for situations exactly like the one that happened yesterday. I calculated that the company earns approximately a million dollars per hour. Which means any down time is very expensive. Companies value time in dollars.
So how should we value our own time? We sell it to our employers, whether we get paid directly per hour or not. We spend time working and get paid in return. I used to decide whether to hire someone to do something vs. doing it myself by looking at how much I get paid compared with how much it costed to pay someone else to do it. I would consider the fact that I might not have the skill to do the task without doing research and that it would take longer for me to do it. But that’s not an accurate valuation.
Corporations can theoretically live forever. The people that started the company I work for are all dead. I know this because if they were not, they would have been on the list of super-centenarians I just finished sharing with you in episodes 160-170. But our time is limited. Which means we can’t buy additional time. It’s priceless. In fact, the price is infinity. You can’t buy time.
So my company pays to ensure that it does not lose time. Considering the value of our time, what are we willing to do to get more of it? By making healthy choices, we can add time to our lives, or add quality to the time we have left. And it’s really not that much extra time. Once you know what to buy in the grocery store you can get it every time. Once you design your exercise routine you can just repeat it. That’s the meaning of the word routine. So that time doing research, listening to Running: A FEVER, watching the healthy meal prep videos at http://RunningAFEVER.com/youtube, can have a very high value. Making a decision takes practically no time at all. And that decision could be infinitely valuable if it adds even a second to your life. Especially a second of quality time. The time you spend listening to this episode or reading this post is infinitely valuable.
I would love to hear from you about what you are doing and how your life is going. Do you love your life? What are you doing to express that love?
