Welcome to the 3rd in our series on centenarians. Misao Okawa lived from 3/5/1898 to 4/1/2015, a total of 117 years and 27 days. She is ninth on the list of all-time longest-lived people.
Misao was from Japan, born in Kita-ku, Osaka.
She married at 21, and her husband died only 12 years later. She had 3 children, 2 of whom lived until she died, when they were in their 90’s. She also had 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Ms. Okawa was the daughter of a kimono maker, and was reportedly born in a kimono shop. Not something you come across every day!
Quality of Life:
Misao lived in a nursing home the later years of her life. On her last birthday she was asked if 117 was long or short and she said it seemed rather short. From that, I can infer that she wanted to live as long as possible and probably loved her life.
Her eldest son, 92, was present at the birthday celebration.
Diet:
Her favorite dish was mackerel sushi, which is high in protein and omega-3 fatty acids.
Her secret for longevity, she said in an interview at age 114, was to “watch out for one’s health”.
She also liked to get plenty of sleep, which we know is important for good health.
